BANYAN TREE
BANYAN TREE
Mannu resided in a village in Himachal. At the age of twelve, he yearned to live life on his own terms. He was in the sixth grade and had a deep appreciation for the hilly landscape, often dreaming of exploring the nearby forests. His parents owned four cows, which provided him with endless joy and entertainment. His two greatest passions were wandering through the hills and playing with the cows.
Mannu's interests consistently strained his relationship with his parents. He often felt that they were imposing their wishes upon him. His desire was to spend his entire day exploring the mountain trails, finding solace only in the company of his four cows.
His parents consistently encouraged him to focus on his studies and consider his future career. They were quite concerned as they observed the neighbors’ children studying rigorously, with some having already moved to the city. Their desire was for Mannu to become a successful man.
In their village, opportunities for earning a living were scarce, but Mannu was unwilling to recognize this fact. His parents continually urged him to focus on his education, but he disregarded their advice and often clashed with them. Each week, he would take leave from school, often fabricating excuses to avoid attending for a day or two. His disinterest in studying was clear, as he would argue against any request made by his parents.
Mannu's mother recognized that if she did not intervene regarding his behavior, he would not find the right path in life. She felt frustrated by his disrespectful attitude towards them. As their sole child, his actions had been tolerated throughout his childhood. However, with his maturity, she felt compelled to instruct Mannu to decide between focusing on his studies or leaving home.
Mannu was filled with frustration due to the constant restrictions placed on his study time. He chose to leave home and ventured into the jungle. Sitting beneath a Banyan tree, he felt both despondent and hungry. The Banyan tree said, “Child, I can provide you with shade, but I cannot offer you food. Why do you appear so sad and lost in the jungle alone?”
Mannu responded, "This is quite a lengthy story that dates back to my childhood. I have always felt the pressure from my parents. I long to play with my four beloved cows, as they bring me joy. I also have a passion for exploring the jungle every day. Unfortunately, my parents do not comprehend my needs and feelings. They insist that I focus solely on my studies and pursue a career in the city once I finish my education.
According to their perspective, the village does not provide future possibilities, making it imperative to relocate to the city for a better existence. Nevertheless, they do not understand my love for my village and the cows, as I prefer their company. I find joy in playing with them and exploring the jungle whenever I have the chance.
I have finally decided to leave my home, as I cannot remain in an environment where my thoughts are not understood. From now on, I will live according to my own feelings and perspectives.”
The tree inquired, "Have you ever considered why they express such sentiments? What emotions do they experience in response to the disrespect you show?"
Munna expressed, "Disrespect? They habitually overlook my thoughts and emotions. I simply chose not to comply with what they wish to impose on me."
The banyan tree said, “You might be surprised to learn that I, too, am experiencing sadness.”
“Why do you feel that way?” Munna questioned.
The tree began to express its emotions, stating, “I am 170 years old and have witnessed countless individuals throughout my existence. I offer many gifts to people without expecting anything in return. I provide shade when it is needed, and my leaves serve their sacred purposes, while my oil is used for medicinal applications. I never voice my pain or seek compensation for what I give.
However, I often face disrespect, as people waste paper, cut down trees, and sometimes discard their refuse upon me.
While I do not seek their respect, it saddens me that they choose to treat us with such disrespectful behaviour.”
Munna was surprised to realize that he had never acknowledged how disrespect could affect those who offer their help without seeking anything in return. He hurried home and pleaded with his mother, "Please forgive me and grant me another opportunity to be the good son you desire."
His mother was delighted by his words and held him close in a loving embrace.
